Save Six Flags Trip at DMS
The Issue
Here at DMS, the 8th graders who participate in chorus or band usually get to go to Six Flags New England as a reward. This year, to save money, they want to take us to Lake Compounce. Some of the kids in the band and chorus have been waiting for this for 4 years, and Lake Compounce sounds inadequate to most of us, since we have been playing since 5th grade. I should also add that the kids individually pay for their own ticket (to Six Flags). All the school would have to pay for would be the buses, which they already pay for everyday to get kids to and from school. The kids are also responsible for anything they buy inside the park. The school is also saving some money when they buy the tickets off the website. There are hundreds of different coupon sites that we could use to cheapen the total ticket price. The kids who went last year had to pay $80, and that was for all the rides, plus a free meal and a free drink. We think that it is unfair that after all these years, we have to settle for a amusement park that we were not promised. [EDIT: Last year, the 7th grade orchestra and the 7th grade Select Woodwind Ensemble and Jazz Band got to go to Six Flags New England. The orchestra also gets to go on many fieldtrips throughout the year and at the end of every year.] [EDIT 2: Many kids in band, orchestra, and chorus are uncomfortable wearing bathing suits in front of their peers. While Six Flags New England does have a water park, it doesn't have as many water themed rides as Lake Compounce does. The water park at Six Flags also might not be open if we go.]
