Sonography is an art and a skill that is not fully understood by others outside of this field. If sonographers come together to create standards of expectations for employers we will also create accountability for employers, education programs and accreditation programs. Health care is fueled by profit not patient care or employee safety. Many of us work alone where our voice is muted. Union is a way to make our voices and concerns heard.

I support the creation of a national sonography union because we deserve a unified voice to advocate for fair wages, safe working conditions, and professional respect.

Sonographers are highly trained, yet we often face heavy workloads, limited breaks, and little protection from injury or burnout. I’ve seen too many talented colleagues leave the field because the demands were unsustainable. It time to put quality back over quantity.

A union would give us the power to negotiate better staffing, enforce safety standards, and ensure we’re treated as the vital healthcare professionals we are. It’s time we stand together for the future of our profession.

Sonography workloads can be overwhelming due to the combination of physical, mental, and emotional stress that comes with the job. Physically, sonographers perform repetitive movements in awkward positions for hours, which often leads to strain or injury, especially in the shoulders, wrists, and back. Mentally, you’re constantly analyzing what you see in real time while trying to stay efficient and accurate—there’s no room for zoning out. Emotionally, it’s tough seeing serious pathology or having to keep a neutral face when patients ask if everything looks okay. Add in short staffing, high patient volumes, unrealistic time slots, and a lack of understanding or respect from others in the medical field, and it creates a heavy, burnout-prone environment that can wear down even the most passionate professionals.

Being forced to perform more studies and quicker inevitably will create the perfect storm for a sonographer to lose sight of the responsibility they hold for creating diagnostic quality studies while real-time evaluating and documenting all possible pathology for patients which could translate into life-changing altered care they receive. I have personally witnessed it occur. Placing emphasis on the importance of sonographers receiving the ability to perform their tasks over forcing quantity needs to be at the forefront to reduce injury to sonographers and patients.
