Save Singapore Horse Racing
The Issue

Save Singapore Horse Racing!
Save our 180 year old heritage, do not let us erase this beloved cultural landmark and an essential part of our national identity!
Horse racing is a sport, an entertainment, a meeting point for people from all walks of life in Singapore. Covid has hit this industry hard, it has just gotten back on their feet, only to have the rug pulled under their feet with no warning at all. Horse racing has so much potential to be an entertainment event for locals and tourists alike, so let’s give them time to make that happen.
From the trainers and jockeys, stable hands and administrative staff, the closure of the Turf Club will have a severe impact on the many hardworking individuals and their families. We are talking about close to 1000 locals whose jobs will no longer exist. And these are good jobs in a highly specialized industry filled with young passionate equine enthusiasts, experts and veterans. Individuals in this industry are earning annual incomes of up to $200k. It is unimaginable that when they make their career switch due to the closure, they will be able to earn anything close to their current income. This will impact their families greatly especially in this climate of rising cost of living. The skillsets of the industry are also so specialized that it is not directly transferable to other industries.
The industry association said “this came out of the blue without any form of dialogue.” The government doesn’t seem to understand the consequences of so many people in this industry. Who are the real faces impacted? Read more here, stable hands and jockeys with zero retrenchment compensation and the dreams of our local female millennial jockey dashed.
Local racing has also consistently demonstrated its commitment to responsible gambling, and ensuring the highest level of integrity in the sport of horse racing and horses care. Closing it will no doubt turn the tables on responsible gambling and what will happen to these horses and the horses worth several millions of dollars, waiting to arrive in Singapore. These horses are animals with beating hearts.
Let us appeal to our Government to reconsider their decision here with our vote TODAY!
Let’s give the racing community a chance to explore all possible ways to keep this iconic institution alive for generations to come.
