The Issue

Shiplake Island has been a part of the Thames' social and cultural fabric for over a century. Established in 1880, its beautiful ridge-pole tents preserve many camping traditions from that time. The Island is a cherished local landmark and is recognised as a local heritage site, playing a unique part in the character of the village and riverway.

On the Island many historically significant boats are restored and maintained such as rare Victorian whiffs, wherries and punts. The unique set up of the Island enables the nurturing of traditional boating skills and it plays an active role in preserving this heritage. Many compete in the local Wargrave and Shiplake Regatta, one of only a handful of remaining regattas that keeps the legacy skills of skiffing and punting alive.

This unique piece of history and part of our heritage could be lost. Please support us by signing this petition asking the Environment Agency not to close the Island after 150 years of existence.
