Save Sex Ed in Miami-Dade Schools

Save Sex Ed in Miami-Dade Schools
The Issue
We are a group of parents who demand that our Miami-Dade County students have a reproductive and sexual health curriculum when they return to school this fall.
On July 20, the Miami-Dade School Board voted 5-4 against adopting previously-approved, age-appropriate, sexual health education textbooks for middle and high school classrooms. Both the school board staff and an independent hearing officer recommended the books, and the School Board itself initially approved the textbooks in April. This decision leaves our kids without a reproductive and sexual health curriculum, even though the subject is required by the state.
Sexual health education keeps our students safe from not only pregnancy and disease, but from adult predators and bullying. The textbooks cover how to report abuse, in addition to consent and body safety, topics objected to by the small group of people opposing them.
The board based its decision on the objections of this small minority, despite the fact that 90 percent of speakers at the meeting were the parents, students, alums and advocates who supported these textbooks.
We honor the parental rights of those who choose not to allow their children to learn about reproductive health and safety from our schools, and they have the ability to opt out of these lessons. However, we can't ignore the needs of our Miami-Dade students and the rights of parents who count on our teachers to provide this critical information in an age-appropriate and accurate manner.
We ask the Miami-Dade School Board, which serves all children, to reverse its July 20th vote in order to comply with Florida law and to honor the parents who count on accurate and age-appropriate sex education in our schools as well as the children whose lives may depend on it.
The Miami-Dade School Board is meeting on Thursday July 28th to discuss the impact of their vote to remove sexual health education from our schools. Join us in showing strong support for critical reproductive health and safety education. Please add your School District in the "Reason for Signing" section at the bottom - find yours here.
Thank you for advocating for Miami-Dade children!
