Save Scott’s Barber Shop – Stop the Cultural Cleansing of Newcastle

Save Scott’s Barber Shop – Stop the Cultural Cleansing of Newcastle
The Issue
To the Gainford Group:
Since 1919, Scott’s Barber Shop has been more than a business — it has been part of the cultural fabric of Newcastle. A family-run institution, it has served generations with care, conversation, and continuity — a rare and valuable presence in the heart of the city.
It is important to know that everyone has the next three months to get as many haircuts as you can, to catch up, have a craic with the boys, and show them how appreciated and loved they are.
Now, due to a sudden and extreme rent increase by the Gainford Group — nearly tripling overnight — Scott’s has been forced to shut its doors. In three months time. This is not just a business decision. It’s cultural vandalism. It’s a decision that tells the people of Newcastle that history, loyalty, and community don’t matter — only profit does.
We, the undersigned, call on the Gainford Group to:
• Reverse or significantly reduce the rent increase, to allow Scott’s to continue trading at 86 Side.
• Recognise the historical and cultural value of institutions like Scott’s in commercial decision-making.
• Engage in honest dialogue with the Scott’s team and the local community before making irreversible decisions.
Scott’s is not just a barber shop. It’s a living piece of Newcastle’s heritage. Its closure would be a loss not only to those who’ve gone there for decades but to the soul of the city itself.
Let’s make it clear: Newcastle deserves better.
