Phase Two of the R4 Zoning Review, which applies to most of the community, is due to be completed. Despite the current loose limits compared to similar neighbourhoods in cities like Toronto, City staff continue to indicate that they want to make R4 areas more dense. Sandy Hill residents continue to ask for rules which preserve the neighbourhood’s heritage and diversity and look for new development to respect its existing character.

Ottawa’s Official Plan is being revamped, starting this year. This document guides all development in the city and sets out the overall vision for urban planning in the City over the next 10 years. The Official Plan can also set out guidelines for specific neighbourhoods, such as Sandy Hill, through Secondary Plans.

Community Associations across Ottawa with Heritage Conservation Districts -- Sandy Hill now has 8 of them -- have brought in expert heritage consultant Julian Smith. His report which recommends specific actions to help preserve our heritage districts is gaining traction at Council.

ASH will be involved in all aspects of this important work and we are looking for dedicated volunteers who would like to get involved. Just email us at info@ash-acs.ca.
