Protect the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Gardens

We ask the New Zealand Government to protect the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua and uphold the 2018 agreement that committed to preserving these long‑standing community gardens.

For more than two decades, the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua gardens and food forest at Mt Albert by Unitec have provided a place for learning, connection, and wellbeing. They are a rare urban green space where people grow food, care for the environment, and build community together.

Why this matters

• The gardens are protected in the 2018 Sale & Purchase Agreement, which states they must be preserved.
• They support mental health and community connection, offering a peaceful space for people of all ages and backgrounds.
• They are an established biodiversity and food‑growing hub, home to mature trees, teaching gardens, and an urban ecosystem that cannot be easily replaced.

What we are asking

We call on the Government to:

• Uphold Clause 25.4 of the 2018 Sale & Purchase Agreement
• Protect the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua gardens for future generations
• End legal steps that threaten the garden’s continued existence

Let’s keep this unique community space alive.  Preserve the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua.
