SAVE SAINT LUCIA'S MOTORSPORTS (THE BASE)

SAVE SAINT LUCIA'S MOTORSPORTS (THE BASE)
The Issue
Who is impacted?
The home for motorsports affectionately known as The Base or "Cacabef" is being taken away for the Hewannora International Airport development project and companies like Rubis, Sol and Saint Lucia Helicopters will be using the base in the airport expansion to install non permanent structures to assist with providing support for the final iteration of the project . This places the Rubis installation, the first to start near the middle of the available track and makes running drag racing nearly impossible. The southern home for citizens of Saint Lucia, motorcyclists, drag racing, autocross, other events, driving lessons, motorsports practice sessions, autocross, drifting, exercise, horse racing and a host of other activities is being taken away to facilitate the expansion of the airport.
What is at stake?
Without this venue to allow various groups an avenue to express their passions we fear that economic activity in the south will fall as well as more avenues for the youth to be led astray and an increase in crime, health issues and accidents on the road from street racing. Something Must be done!
Why is now the time to act?
Now is the time to act before irreparable damage is done to the area and to allow motorsports to continue such as the national Drag racing in December and international drag racing in February where a host of regional teams make Saint Lucia their home for days and bolster revenues on island and attend events and participate in Independence events. Due to Saint Lucia's strategic location near the center of the eastern Caribbean it makes it a great proposition for a number of islands and the width of the base allows for exciting and safe racing. Also hot on the heels of the Saint Lucian Drag Racing team winning in Antigua & Barbuda and other Saint Lucian nationals representing well in Saint Vincent we cannot afford to lose this motorsports momentum. Action and your signature is needed immediately to save motorsports on island. To that extent we ask you to sign this petition to show support for motorsports and other related activities. We ask that the projects be halted until a new location can be found to relocate these companies or the airport development project reworked for continued use of the base. If not possible we ask that construction be halted until after February and official work be given on the beginning of construction for a new home for all motorsports activities. This will allow continued motorsports development in the immediate future then permanent activities for all motorsport clubs in the new permanent location. Motorsports has so much potential in the region and we ask that Saint Lucians young and old be given that avenue to enhance our contributions to motorsports and continue to improve our offerings on island and to the region. Today Julian Alfred stands as the Olympic Champion, tomorrow a Saint Lucian could be a champion of Motorsports on an international stage. Together we can come together and make a difference!
