Save Rolling Meadows Skating Program (no monetary donations requested)
The Issue
The History We are reaching out because we recently learned of the resignation of our beloved Skating Programs Supervisor at Rolling Meadows Park District due to fundamental misunderstandings of the needs of the figure skating programs by the superintendency of the ice rink. History She has served the ice skating community for 37 years in various coaching and programmatic roles, and has been supervisor of figure skating for over 20 years. The programs she oversees include learn to skate classes, specialty classes, ice camps, the annual ice show (54 years strong), private lessons, and much more. Her wealth of knowledge is deep and specialized. She has cultivated a program that provides opportunities inclusive to all skaters, whether recreational or competitive. To be clear, she is the heart and soul of the figure skating community which serves not only Rolling Meadows, but also Arlington Heights and Palatine due to the reciprocity these communities benefit in the absence of having an ice rink. Her knowledge encompasses the complex world of figure skating that only comes with a lifelong career of dedication and passion to the sport. She is able to help families navigate everything from their very first ice lesson, to choreographing an ice show that draws hundreds of spectators, to helping advanced skaters find their pathway to National and World Level Competitions. It is because of her that hundreds of skaters over the years, instructors, and families have found their home here, from tots to adults, special needs athletes to gold level skaters. Her leadership has been invaluable, and she has fostered an environment that provides a welcoming atmosphere for all. What’s at stake There is a severe financial impact at stake. Figure skating has steadily increased in Rolling Meadows, May 2025 Board minutes demonstrate gross receipts from figure skating increasing from $381,791 to $469,192 from pre-Covid 2019-2020 to the present year. With Leanne’s leadership, there has been a 200% increase in revenue from previous years. Figure skating has been increasing in popularity and the program has been flourishing with her at the helm. Money aside, with her resignation, we will not only lose her leadership and speciality expertise that is decades in the making, but also the community she has built. Additionally, we risk the loss of the coaches who teach group and private lessons and the overall program that serves recreational, competitive ISI (Ice Sports Industry) and USFS (United States Figure Skating) organizations. This community extends beyond Rolling Meadows employees to include specialized coaches and athletes she has procured to serve our skaters. To be sure, skaters will follow their coaches to the rinks they switch to, and Rolling Meadows Park District will be left in a vacuum and starting from scratch. Important to also note, those of us who have invested years have stayed at Nelson Sports Complex because of the supervisor and coaches, not because of the facility. What we want We are concerned that as of June 1, this community will be forever lost. We cannot let this happen without our voices being heard. We as community members, taxpayers and skating families seek clarity to understand the background of the decisions being made. We deserve transparency to understand the decisions of a superintendency who is never actually present in the ice rink to see the programs they are presiding upon nor the quality of the ice they make decisions about. Many of us have spent thousands of dollars over the years in these programs, and would like to see them continue and flourish. Younger, aspiring skaters deserve access to these invaluable resources. The figure skating world is complex, and it takes years to fully understand. It is a niche sport, that, without our current supervisor, families will be at a loss to navigate. We specifically demand clarity around the following issue: -What steps will be taken to fix this and retain our current ice program supervisor
-What steps will be taken to allow for the figure skating program to be led with trust and autonomy We demand better and our community deserves better. Please sign this petition if you agree that greater transparency is required about decisions made in our ice rinks.
