The Issue

For generations, Rock Springs Ranch and 4-H Center has stood as more than just a camp; it is a cornerstone of youth leadership development in the great state of Kansas. Countless young people have tread its paths, each of them absorbing the vital attributes that define our Kansas spirit — leadership, service, perseverance, hard work, and a profound appreciation for our land.

Today, Rock Springs is at risk. This beloved place that embodies our values and nurtures our young leaders is facing challenges that threaten its very existence. As Kansans, Rock Springs is part of our heritage, a living testament to our shared values and aspirations. Each year, it provides a safe haven where young people from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, grow, and form lasting connections. The impact of the 4-H programs offered here extends beyond the camp itself, influencing families and communities for generations.

The importance of preserving Rock Springs cannot be overstated. With an ever-evolving world, it’s crucial we maintain spaces like Rock Springs Ranch where the roots of resilience and leadership continue to be cultivated. According to the National 4-H Council, membership in 4-H programs improves young people’s likelihood of pursuing higher education, performing community service, and becoming productive members of society. Statistics show that rural youth who participate in these programs are more likely to return to their communities to make a difference.

The potential shuttering of Rock Springs would mean a significant loss not only to Kansas but to the country at large, as it deprives future leaders of a chance to learn and grow in an environment that has proven its worth for decades. We call on local and state authorities, as well as national 4-H organizations, to prioritize the preservation and continued operation of this vital institution.

This is a pivotal moment for the future of youth leadership in Kansas. By safeguarding Rock Springs Ranch and 4-H Center, we affirm our commitment to nurturing the ideals that have shaped so many. Let us stand together to protect this invaluable resource, ensuring that future generations of Kansans can also benefit from its transformative power.

Please join us in urging Kansas State University to partner with the 4-H Foundation to rethink selling Rock Springs and work with the legislature to find ways to create a sustainable path forward for Rock Springs. At the very least, KSU  and the 4-H Foundation should hold off making this decision until the legislature can reconvene in January 2027 to have broader conversations about Rock Springs’ future. Please urge them to allow 4-H, KAY, and other camps to begin booking for Summer 2027 (as we explore better solutions) before the camp experience slips away and is lost forever.
