Save Ray Mill Island Zoo (Pets Corner) - Pause the Rehoming and Explore a Better Future.
The Issue

We the undersigned petition the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to Pause the planned rehoming of the birds and guinea pigs at Ray Mill Island Pets Corner while RBWM publishes the welfare evidence behind the decision and carries out a transparent review of whether Pets Corner can be refurbished, redesigned or otherwise improved to provide an appropriate long-term environment for the animals.
Justification:
Ray Mill Island Pets Corner, including its much-loved aviary and guinea pigs, has been a familiar part of visits to the island and Riverside for generations of Maidenhead families. This is not a new or temporary attraction. The aviary has been an established feature for decades.
For many local children and families, Pets Corner provides an accessible and free opportunity to see animals and learn about them as part of a visit to one of Maidenhead’s best-known riverside spaces. It has become part of the character and identity of Ray Mill Island.
RBWM has sadly announced that it intends to find new homes for the birds and guinea pigs because of concerns about whether their current setting can continue to provide the environment and care they need and deserve. We fundamentally agree that animal welfare must come first.
However, before this longstanding community facility is permanently lost, residents should be able to understand the evidence behind that decision and whether alternatives have been properly considered.
We therefore ask RBWM to publish the professional welfare assessment or other evidence supporting the decision; explain the specific shortcomings identified at the existing Pets Corner; assess and cost the improvements that would be required; and consider whether refurbishment, redesign, sponsorship, community involvement or other funding could provide a safe and sustainable future for this important local community facility that has been a part of Riverside and Ray Mill Island for decades.
