Save Randwick Stables’ Wildlife Corridor

Save Randwick Stables’ Wildlife Corridor
The issue
SUPPORT RANDWICK STABLES
The State Government is considering rezoning for future land use the western section of the land corridor originally reserved for the Roe Highway extension corridor – from North Lake Rd, Coolbellup to Healy Rd, Hamilton Hill (known as Roe 8 West & Roe 9).
The entire area is a Wildlife Corridor for precious species.
Randwick Stables (established in 1923) was listed as a Category A living heritage site in 2001. Randwick Stables engage with local community on a daily basis, providing much needed connection with animals and the environment. The stables and adjoining Randwick Stables Community Garden provides a place of social interaction, sense of belonging in the community and within a historical perspective.
Randwick Stables is integral as part of the Wildlife Corridor. The cape lilac trees which surround the stables are a food source for the endangered red-tailed cockatoos.
We request the State Government to heed our appeal to protect the heritage stables:
- Provide a protective curtilage zone around the stables, including Cardigan St. This is to provide access for the horses and community, ensuring the viable contiuation as a horse stables.
- Protect the bushland on Cardigan St as well as the houses which provide affordable housing to community. Cardigan St is part of the historical path leading to the heritage horse beach.
- Protect the bushland to the North (behind the stables) which is integral to the stables and as part of the Wildlife Corridor.
- We urge the State Government to protect the entire Wildlife Corridor, for the good of the community as passive green spaces in the City of Cockburn are severely lacking.
