The Coalition to Save Historic Rahway River Park
Dec 17, 2015
We’re scared and need you to do something. We need you to read, think and decide whether you can be scared too.
We have a Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/saverahwaypark/ , a website, http://www.saverahwaypark.org/ , and an online petition https://www.change.org/p/save-rahway-park. We’ve done a lot of outreach, had our group profiled in local news (print and online), and gone to a lot of meetings. We supported candidates for Freeholder in the last election, and saw really good turnout in areas with historic voter apathy. We feel like we’ve delayed the construction at least a year, yet the County Machine is only slowed.
Part of our recent efforts have been reviewing scientific literature on the material the Machine proposes for the field; how the chemical constituents probably affect kids; how girls are disproportionately affected. We read studies on things like non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, thyroid problems, wounds that don’t heal well, and heat exhaustion. We worry that new information about the greater preponderance of concussions for players on turf fields over grass is just coming out. Research is being done every day, this very minute, on this very subject. ESPN, CBS news, the USEPA – all have said that this deserves more attention. That our children deserve more attention.
We’re scared that when we look at kids playing - our children, your children, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren, that the world we’re giving them may kill them. That some of the kids you see in your Christmas pictures may never get to the prom, or college, or start families of their own.
We need you to be as scared as us; scared enough to do something. You can like us on Facebook, sign our petition, even get a lawn sign, but that’s, to steal from Neil Simon’s Barefoot In The Park, that’s what watchers do. We need everyone to be a doer. We need everyone who watches in life to get scared enough to do. It’s really simple. Just say no. These fields are going in EVERYWHERE. It doesn’t matter if you use this park or not. Where you recreate, these are coming, if they’re not already there. We need to write to every elected official, school principal, athletic director, little league coach, school nurse, health department official, PTA President, and BOE member and say “No, my child will not be playing on that field.” Even if each of you writes only ONE letter, you’ll plant a seed. Go and watch it grow.
