SAVE QUEENS AVENUE TREES - STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF 250+ MATURE TREES

SAVE QUEENS AVENUE TREES - STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF 250+ MATURE TREES

The issue

Help stop the planned destruction of 250+ trees

We are residents of the City of Glen Eira, a region that has seen its tree canopy cover drastically decrease from 25% in 2000 to just over 12.5% today (Glen Eira Urban Forest Strategy, adopted on 29 June, 2021). This is one of the lowest levels of any Melbourne Local Government Area.

Now, our community faces another blow as the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) plans to remove more than 250 established trees along Queens Avenue, Caulfield East to install a shared user path (SUP).  This decision has been made without any community consultation.

We call on the Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Honourable Danny Pearson to urgently intervene and stop this planned tree removal. These trees along the 1km that is Queens Avenue provide habitat for a range of wildlife and are not just part of our landscape but also part of our identity and heritage - a number of these trees are listed on the significant tree register.

The destruction of established trees must stop. Our environment cannot afford it and neither can our community's wellbeing. The loss of these trees would not only further reduce our already low canopy cover but also impact local biodiversity and contribute towards climate change.

We urge Minister Danny Pearson to stop the planned tree destruction and discuss alternative more cost effective solutions that preserve our precious urban forest while accommodating infrastructure needs.

Please stand with us in protecting Melbourne's green heritage now and for future generations.
