The Issue

Warm Mineral Springs is a prehistoric and natural treasure. It is located in and owned by the City of North Port, Florida.

The purpose of this petition is to STOP the overdevelopment and possible collapse of the Springs due to its' "karst" topography.

WHAT IS PROPOSED: A disastrous "unsolicited P3" proposal from a development group was recently received by the city manager, who then presented it to the commission.  It is seriously being considered for approval by the 5-member commission that governs the city and they are seeking a public/private partnership. The city of North Port is working at lightning speed to push this proposal through, even though the area's taxpaying residents and worldwide visitors are vehemently opposed to it.

The "unsolicited P3" development plans reflect several multi-storied buildings that would include a 250-room resort hotel, condominiums, wellness center, medical offices, a museum, and other structures. Additionally, the development group states, they want to build on a minimum of 50 acres of the 61 acre "split" parcel, otherwise, known as "Activity Center 7."

THE DANGER: Due to the "karst" topography of the parcel and the placement of the spring's vents, the weight of large buildings and the earthshaking activity that accompanies heavy construction will pose a huge risk potentially resulting in the collapse of the springs.

THE IMPORTANCE: Warm Mineral Springs is the only warm water spring in Florida and is the city’s main natural and cultural attraction which brings to the area, statewide, national and worldwide visitation. Additionally, its' peaceful/tranquil surrounding habitats support numerous plant species and wildlife, (some of which are endangered and/or threatened) which visitors appreciate seeing.

The Springs is a 1 1/2-acre sinkhole that resembles a lake and has a depth of about 225 feet at it's debris cone. It maintains an average temperature of 86 degrees year-round and contains more than 53 different minerals, which is the highest in the US and 3rd highest in the world. The water is also anaerobic (oxygen free) which allows for the preservation of organic matter.

This sinkhole was formed over 30,000 years ago, the result of the collapse of a layer of limestone bedrock. The Springs was used as a burial site by Paleo Indians dating back to about 11,000 years ago. Human bones from about 8 "Paleos", were found. Significantly, the skull that was found contained organic brain matter still intact. Numerous extinct animals that include giant ground sloths, saber tooth cats, mastodons and woolly mammoths were also discovered within it's waters, along with several types of tools. Who knows what else is yet to be discovered within it's waters and the surrounding acreage!

WE NEED YOU: Please sign and share this petition widely with family, friends and on social media. This sacred, historic and archaeological gem must be protected.

Thank you for your support.
