Save Pinner Rugby Club from closure

The Issue

Pinner Rugby Club, a cornerstone of the Hatch End community in Harrow for over 70 years, is at imminent risk of closure due to the lack of ground maintenance and  lease renewal for the playing fields by Harrow Council.

This cherished institution is not just a sports club; it is a beacon of community spirit and inclusivity, fostering a love for rugby among approximately 70 young boys and girls, as well as an equal number of senior team players.

For decades, Pinner Rugby Club has been nurturing talent, promoting health, and building lifelong friendships. It provides a safe environment where local youth and adults alike can build skills, discipline, and confidence through sport. Losing this club would mean losing a piece of community history and a vital support system for many families.

The field maintenance issue, stemming from negligence by Harrow Council, is not just an inconvenience; it's has now become a threat to our community's well-being. Already, the grounds have fallen into disrepair making it challenging, if not impossible, to safely conduct all practices and matches required to sustain the club’s operations and continue its activities.

Last year Pinner RFC had to spend £6000 from its own very small budget to ensure the pitches were playable for the season. For a small grass roots club this is simply not sustainable.

We asked that Harrow Council deduct this from the pitch rental fees for last season, however they have so far refused to do this. They now won’t hire the pitches to us for the forthcoming season until last season’s outstanding rent is paid in full.

This is not just about rugby; it's about preserving a community’s heart and ensuring a better future for the next generation. Losing Pinner Rugby Club would mean taking away an essential part of Hatch End’s identity and depriving local youth of opportunities for growth and interaction that sports uniquely provide.

We urge Harrow Council to take immediate action to restore and maintain the grounds of Pinner Rugby Club and continue to lease us the playing fields. By allocating necessary resources and prioritizing ground upkeep, the council can ensure that our beloved club remains a vibrant and thriving hub for sports and community development.

Let us stand together to protect this invaluable resource. Let's ensure that Pinner Rugby Club can continue its 70-year legacy, inspiring and supporting the Hatch End community for many more decades. Sign this petition to demand action from Harrow Council and save our beloved club from closure. Your support can make a difference—together we can keep the spirit of rugby alive at Pinner Rugby Club.
