In 2024 Shane Jones the minister of  Oceans and Fisheries got rid of the mortality rate of New Zealand sea lions 

 Based on the pup count for New Zealand sea lions, the population is in a constant state of decline. There is no reason to remove one of the last remaining safeguards we have for keeping these animals safe

Shane Jones has said "I think that we've got bigger things to worry about. There's probably more sea lions being predated upon by killer whales than politicians,"  passing the blame on the food chain rather than taking responsibility  for the deliberate endangerment of an endemic animal 

Fishing companies are getting away with underreporting Pakake deaths, and not taking proper precautions to prevent thier deaths.
