The Issue

As a new resident of Oxford and a new adoptive mom, the importance of having accessible community spaces hits home for me. Especially in such a college town where drinking seems to be encouraged- Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) in the Uptown Business District. Growing up, the local skatepark was more than just ramps and rails; it was a pivotal place for bonding, laughter, and outdoor fun with family. Now, I find myself wanting to continue this tradition with my own family in Oxford. However, the skatepark is unsafe because of a lack of maintenance and with the potential closure of our skatepark, this dream feels threatened.

A skatepark is not just wood, cement and/or metal; it's a vital community hub. Many of us here, young and old, have found joy and companionship in these spaces, and it serves as an essential outlet away from the daily grind. Currently, there are no neighboring skateparks in our city and traveling to the closest ones is inconvenient for most hard working families, on top of the only other 2 far away skateparks either lack beginner-friendly spaces or are too small like the one at Joyce Park.

The cause for concern? Our beloved skatepark faces closure due to its need for repairs or a complete rebuild. A plan was proposed with a staggering estimated cost of $300,000 for a new park, but the lack of detailed breakdowns raises eyebrows. Despite this, no funding was secured for 2023/2024 due to claimed shortages in resources. Instead of giving up, now is the time for us to get resourceful.

Our skatepark's space, which is already optimally laid out, should not be handed over for more pickleball courts when a large community stands ready to support keeping it operational. With a collective effort, we can explore alternative funding methods, community partnerships, and volunteer efforts to preserve our park and ensure it serves future generations.

We need our city leaders to prioritize and preserve the skatepark as a cornerstone of community wellness and recreation. Sign this petition to show your support for saving Oxford's skatepark, and together, let's foster a space that continues to cultivate positivity and connection in our lives. Your signature could make all the difference.

Kayla StewartPetition StarterI live to do what i love now but was homeless for years, never gave up, hustled and learned a lot. I shifted my mindset & accomplished what others believed was impossible. There is no such thing as a lack of resources if you're resourceful :)
