I would like to thank everyone for sharing their memories and information regarding Mining in Owlthorpe. The photo is from a book by Ken Wain. Dent Main Colliery (Birley Wood) is included. Dent Main was one of the last pits to use ponies. We have been informed that the stables for the ponies were situated at the side of the 3 Way Stile number (6) on our on-line visitor’s guide to Ecological Owlthorpe. The ponies were taken across Owlthorpe to the blacksmith at Hackenthorpe to be re-shod number (52) n our on-line visitor’s guide to Ecological Owlthorpe, before traveling to Dent Main Colliery number (37) on our on-line visitor’s guide to Ecological Owlthorpe. Does anybody have any memories or information regarding the pit-ponies including photos we could use on our web-site. Please contact Kind regards Michael Meredith.
