We are looking for any photos or information regarding Coal Mining in Owlthorpe Sheffield that we could use on our industrial heritage webpages: https://www.ecological-owlthorpe.org When the mines were open, we are aware that water had to be pumped out into the Ochre Dyke to stop Miners from drowning. We are looking for photos of the pit ponies, lorries that delivered coal from Dent Main Collery to Meadowhall power station, the miners, and the mine workings. Although the Coal Authority explain that mine workings in Owlthorpe are in 2 seams of coal at 60m to 180m depth, in a report from Lithos Consulting (Probe hole Log 18) heavy water inflow was below 14.8m depth, much less that 60m. Attached is a photo that shows wooden pit props. I have asked the Coal Authority what effect does flooding have on the pit props that supports the roofs in old mine workings. Coal Boards reply was that they do not hold information on pit props used in old mine workings or the effect that flooding may have on them. I just wondered if any engineers who worked in the Coal Mining industry had any information which would shed light on this issue. We are also looking for copies of the plans of exactly where coal was extracted from in Owlthorpe and in what quantities.
