The Issue

Recently, social media platforms have been increasingly used as an alarming display front for off-road users abusing and misusing our nations roadways, hiking trails, rivers and natural resources in Trinidad, highlighting a dangerous and reckless trend of destruction of public spaces in the name of mindless recreation.

Off-Road vehicle abuse is a growing problem in our country, extending beyond designated trails or spaces specifically designed for such activity. This public nuisance has extended as far as the destruction of public roads such as the Paria Main Road, Lopinot, Caura and Brasso Seco as well as beaches, turtle nesting sites, riverbeds, tributaries and forest trails throughout the Northern Range and across the country.

The overwhelming impact of this destruction further burdens an already strained public infrastructure system. Rural roadways, essential to farmers and already in disrepair due to decades government neglect– are further damaged by off-road vehicle misuse, impacting the livelihoods of many who are already toiling to eke out a living under less than favourable conditions.

Additionally, the delicate equilibrium of our ecosystem is heavily dependent on our ecology remaining untouched by external factors. The desecration presented by off-road vehicles onto our beaches, riverbeds and hiking trails not only serves to upset an already environmentally sensitive process, but also introduces pollution in the form of litter, noise pollution, chemical leakage as well as invasive organisms into areas where their increased presence may have significant adverse consequences. This includes but is not limited to the physical destruction of marine and animal life, nesting areas and flora.

SaveOurTrailsTT is dedicated to protecting and preserving Trinidad and Tobago’s nature trails. Through cleanups, advocacy and sustainable practices, we aim to combat erosion, pollution and environmental damage.

On consultation with the Environment Management Authority of Trinidad and Tobago and the Forestry Division, we seek your support in signing, sharing and promoting our petition. Our goal is to draw attention to the growing threat posed by off-road vehicle misuse on public spaces.

We advocate for stronger enforcement of existing environmental laws, as well as the introduction of stricter penalties to deter the ongoing destruction.
