Save our Sydney Harbour Bridge Heritage

Say NO to NSW Government’s Milsons Point Linear Cycle Ramp

We, the undersigned, strongly object to the NSW Government’s proposed Sydney Harbour Bridge Linear Cycle Ramp at Milsons Point for the following reasons:

1)      It invades the heritage space and visual enjoyment of one of Australia’s icons - the Sydney Harbour Bridge, its approaches and northern pylons

2)      It destroys the heritage qualities of the Milsons Point Station western forecourt, the Burton St arch, the western stairway and the viaduct’s art deco detailing

3)      It will ruin Bradfield Park North and the heritage walkway there, causing loss of mature trees and green community space

4)      It will inconvenience all commuters by relocating bus stops and threaten businesses with reduced on street customer parking

5)      Represents poor value and is against the Act of Parliament which dedicated Bradfield Park to the people of North Sydney in the trust of North Sydney Council

6)      Moreover, it creates an unsafe environment for pedestrians and all road users, including cyclists

North Sydney Council has proposed a proper long-term plan consistent with cycling objectives: a dedicated cycle lane on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If necessary, as an interim measure, provide a lift. If a ramp has to be constructed, it needs to be built in the right location. The North Sydney Council supported, community sponsored, engineering peer reviewed, Community Cycle Ramp in Bradfield Park Central meets Australian standards and provides rideable step free access for all age and capability bike users – a Win/Win outcome.

We therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to:

1.    Immediately halt the Government’s plans to install a Linear Cycle Ramp landing in Bradfield Park North

Re-engage with the community to deliver our Win/Win outcome: the Community Cycle Ramp
