The Issue

National Grid Ventures (otherwise known as LionLink) plan to bring an offshore cabling system from a Netherland's windfarm to power 1m homes in the SE and London. In order to do this, they propose to dig up our Heritage Coastline and build an onshore converter Station on the beach North of Southwold. Underground cabling would be dug (200ft wide trenches) from here to a large substation they plan to build in what is currently a small Hamlet in Friston, Suffolk miles away, carving up AONB on the way and devastating local wildlife and countryside. This substation we are told will require nearly 20acres of land to accommodate it.We are not sure how many acres of coastline will be dug up for the landfall site but to give you an idea, look at the photos of Bawdsey, which is another landfall site just down the coast. These sites will be added to with time, meaning large areas of ONB and world renowned nature Reserve Minsmere will be affected. This company are saying we need to accept one of 5 sites proposed by them, 2 in Walberswick, 1 in Aldeburgh, 1 in Dunwich and 1 in Southwold. All of these areas encompass AONB and are home to diverse bird and wildlife. The option of building an offshore platform which can house the converter station, we were told is not viable, even though our European counterparts that have embarked on this form of green energy, have offshore platforms to positively lessen any onshore environmental devastation caused by such a huge construction project. We are told the whole project will take 4years plus to complete.  We are all reeling from this news but it has been deliberately kept off the radar until it seems its too late for us to do anything about it. We have been given until November 3rd 2023 to choose our optimum site and give our opinions. We know fossil fuels are not sustainable and we have to look for cleaner alternatives, but to carve up the counties beautiful East Suffolk coastline in the name of Net Zero is counter-intuitive and goes against all that our country should be trying to achieve. Keep our beautiful areas of outstanding natural beauty, build on brownfield sites wherever possible and save our wildlife for future generations to come. PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION AND GET US TO 100.000 SIGNATURES SO WE CAN TAKE OUR OBJECTIONS TO GOVERNMENT AND STOP LIONLINK!
