Save Our strand and Prevent Proposed Pacific Oyster Aquaculture Licences Approval.
The Issue
Save our strand by preventing the spread of Aquaculture Licences for Commercial Pacific Oysterfarms, which are proposed for the strand at Ohermong, Dereen River, Renard Strand, the point at Reennagappul and extension of beds at Ardcost. The area is within Ireland's first ever Hope Spot, a Special Area of Conservation and is home to diverse and beautiful birds, marine creatures, plants and shore animals.
It is also our home and we love this quiet and unspoilt amenity, which is invaluable for physical wellbeing and mental health. The proposed development will be not only a visual eyesore, but the consequential noise and environmental pollution will be unbearable and unsafe.
The Unique and renowned area is visible from The Ring of Kerry, the Kerry Way, Skellig Ring, Valentia and Renard and will impact on the local Reliance on tourism.
It is our quiet beautiful place, home to many living things including otters, the rare curlew, migratory birds, native shellfish and a variety of plants.
The shoreline itself is beautifully wild, with precious ancient roots that are over 4000 years old, jutting out from the peat that lines the foreshore and also out through the shoreline pebbles. The peat itself spreads out along the shore and the threat from the release of sequestered carbon is very real.
Operators use machinery and equipment which will be operating at its height at low tide. Work on Existing beds continues during unsocial hours, which not only causes unwanted disturbance for people who live here, but impacts on wildlife. Our resident Otters feed at twilight and we need to look out for these endangered families.
Ten Applications with a spread of approximately over 67 hectares, with over 33 Hectares in Renard Strand, Ohermong, Ardcost and Dereen areas will impact on safe use of the strand and foreshore waters as an amenity.wellbeing. It currently is a quiet place where we walk, swim, row and rest by. It is a place for us and our families and we hope to protect it for future generations. It is of significant importance for our mental and physical wellbeing
