The Issue

The Keg Pool in Stockport is not just any other site; it holds a special place in my heart and in the community. It is the only biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in our area, teeming with unique wildlife and plants. Unfortunately, the river has severely eroded the banks, threatening this precious ecosystem. The river has literally taken the Keg and, along with it, the rich biodiversity that calls this habitat home.

This isn't just an emotional plea; it’s a call to action grounded in reality. SSSI designations are given to areas that are vital for conservation purposes and are protected by law due to their rare and diverse species. The Keg Pool is a crucial environmental asset, offering sanctuary to flora and fauna that might otherwise not survive in urban settings.

According to Natural England, there are over 4,000 SSSIs across the UK. Each of these sites contributes to the country’s natural heritage and biodiversity. However, local factors such as riverbank erosion have a significant impact, capable of disturbing the ecological balance. We have seen similar situations where proactive measures have successfully averted ecological disasters.

Our goal is to petition the Stockport Council and the local environmental agencies to undertake immediate riverbank restoration projects. By reinforcing the banks and implementing sustainable management practices, we can restore stability to the ecosystem and prevent further damage.

Concrete actions like planting native vegetation can help bind the soil, while engineered solutions like riprap (rock armoring) can offer further protection. These measures will not only rehabilitate the riverbank but will also ensure the long-term preservation of our SSSI.

I appeal to you to join us in this fight to save the Keg Pool. Sign this petition to make sure Stockport Council and environmental agencies hear our collective voice before it’s too late to repair the damage. Together, we can ensure that our natural treasures are preserved for future generations.
