Earlier this year, many of you joined the discussion about the Bank of England's plans to feature British wildlife on the next series of banknotes.

Today the shortlist has been  revealed.

To my surprise, the native red squirrel is not on it.

The shortlist was developed with the help of a panel of wildlife experts and includes mammals such as the brown hare, pine marten, hedgehog, red fox, grey seal and bottlenose dolphin.

All are wonderful species.

But I find it difficult to understand how one of Britain's most recognisable (and under threat) native mammals was excluded.

Red squirrels are part of our natural heritage. They already appear on the UK's 2p coin. King Charles has described them as "ambassadors for nature" and has long championed their conservation.

Yet they are absent from the shortlist.

In my capacity as Editor of Pets Magazine and founder of the Save Our Reds campaign, I have contacted the Bank of England's press office asking for clarification on how the shortlist was developed and whether red squirrels were considered during the selection process.

If I receive a response, I will share it with you.

For now, I'd be interested to hear your views. Please email your thoughts to hello@saveourreds.uk.

Were you surprised not to see the red squirrel included?

UPDATE:

Many of you have already been in touch by email and on social media to say you were surprised and disappointed too.

So, rather than simply asking for comments, Save Our Reds has now launched a short public poll to gather views.

Do you think the red squirrel should have been included on the shortlist?

Do you think the public should have been given the opportunity to vote for it?

Please take a moment to share your views here:

I will share the results, along with any response received from the Bank of England, as soon as I can.
