Many of you will know that Little Red grew out of the Save Our Reds campaign.

I’m a journalist by trade and have been writing stories for most of my life. In fact, when I was nine years old I wrote and sketched my first little book about a completely different ecosystem. Storytelling has always been a way for me to explore the natural world and the creatures that live within it.

I wrote Little Red over several months because I wanted a simple way to help children understand why Britain’s red squirrels matter, and why their future depends on the choices we make today.

As I’m not an illustrator, I used modern digital illustration tools to help bring Little Red’s woodland world to life. The story itself, however, is entirely my own.

The book was always meant to be a small messenger for the campaign – a way of sharing the story of our red squirrels with families and younger readers, and helping the next generation understand why these beautiful animals deserve a future in our forests.
