A little piece of exciting news this morning.
The Bank of England has just announced that UK wildlife will feature on the next series of banknotes, with a public consultation later this summer asking people which species they would most like to see.
Which immediately made me think of our campaign.
What if Britain’s native red squirrel appeared on a banknote?
Red squirrels once thrived across Britain. Today they survive only in scattered woodland strongholds, and their future remains uncertain without stronger protection for the habitats they depend on.
Seeing a red squirrel on a British banknote would be more than a lovely design. It would be a powerful symbol of our natural heritage – and a reminder that some species are simply too special to lose. It would be a rallying call to save our reds.
Nominations are expected to open this summer (possibly July – I’ll confirm the exact dates as soon as they are announced).
If the consultation goes ahead as expected, I’ll be encouraging supporters of Save Our Reds to take part and nominate the red squirrel.
For now, I just wanted to share the news with you first.
