The Issue

In recent years, I've grown increasingly concerned about the significant impact that neonicotinoid insecticides, particularly imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam, have had on our environment here in Canada. These insecticides, commonly referred to as neonics, have long been linked to the decline of insect populations, especially our vital pollinators like bees. As someone who cares deeply about ecological balance and biodiversity, I find it alarming that Canada continues to allow the use of these harmful chemicals while the European Union has already implemented an outright outdoor ban.

The evidence is clear and indisputable: neonics are deadly to our pollinators. According to various studies, these chemicals not only kill insects directly but also impair their ability to forage, navigate, and reproduce, leading to catastrophic declines in bee populations. The Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data shows a marked decrease in pollinator numbers, which poses a looming threat to both our agriculture and natural ecosystems.

Our pollinators play an integral role in maintaining the health of our environments and food supply chains, and without them, Canada could face dire consequences. Insect pollination contributes significantly to Canada's economy, with an estimated CAD $2 billion annually derived from pollinated agricultural products. If pollinator populations continue to decline, we risk suffering both ecological and economic setbacks.

It's time for Canada to take action and protect our country’s biodiversity and future food security. Implementing an immediate ban on neonicotinoids would align Canada with global best practices and demonstrate a commitment to environmental preservation. Other safer and more sustainable pest control methods are available, and transitioning to these alternatives will help safeguard our natural resources for generations to come.

Join me in urging the Canadian government to ban the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for the protection of our pollinators, our ecosystems, and our future. Every signature brings us one step closer to living in harmony with nature.
