Save Our Nieghborhoods!
The Issue
Growing up in the serene surroundings of Johnson City, TN, my family and I have cherished the tranquility and natural beauty this area offers. The perfect balance of big-city convenience and small-town charm exist here. However, the recent proposal to rezone 24.64 acres off of Antioch Road from A-1 Agricultural District to RP-2 Planned Residential District threatens to disrupt this delicate harmony.
This proposed rezoning is not just about developing new plots; it's about the potential loss of our heritage and environment. The current agricultural zoning has preserved the area as a vital habitat for numerous wildlife and has maintained the ecological balance that benefits us all. Transitioning this land for residential purposes would inevitably lead to increased traffic, putting strain on our roads, causing noise pollution, and altering the landscape we hold dear. Antioch and West Walnut Roads will be impacted if approved.
Rezoning on the border of the current proposed site has already been green lit, and work has started. We've already observed its effects on our community, and expanding this further only amplifies the negative impacts. The community's infrastructure may not be prepared to handle such rapid development, risking not just the welfare of the environment, but also the quality of life we so deeply value.
We urge the Johnson City leaders to conduct comprehensive environmental and community impact assessments before proceeding further. It's crucial to consider sustainable development options that respect the natural habitat and preserve the character of Johnson City. Perhaps a compromise can be found, such as a less dense residential plan or an increased emphasis on preserving green spaces within the development.
We must stand together to express our concerns and make sure our voices are heard. You can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our beloved community by signing this petition. Let’s protect the beauty and integrity of Johnson City for generations to come. The Johnson City Regional Planning Commission meets on March 10th, 2026, at 6:00pm in the City Commission Chambers on 601 East Main Street to consider the rezoning. Please join us in this vital cause to keep our land beautiful!
