The Issue

Our climate is changing beyond control, and we are feeling the effects of rising heat levels like never before. Maju Forest stands as a vital sanctuary for countless species of wildlife and flora that thrive in its lush embrace. This forest is not just a natural preserve; it is an essential component of our ecosystem, providing irreplaceable biodiversity that supports our environment and helps regulate the local climate. It serves as a heritage site, a remnant of our natural past that we must protect for future generations.

Maju Forest is under imminent threat of destruction, and with its loss, we face the risk of losing many species of wildlife and valuable flora and fauna. The ongoing plans to clear this forest for development and housing projects will rob the environment of a crucial life support system. Various animals, many of which are already endangered, depend on this habitat for survival. For example, the straw-headed bulbul, the buffy fish-owl, the bamboo bat and the familiar long-tailed macaque are just some of the species that rely on this forest for their survival. The loss of Maju Forest will lead to the displacement and potential extinction of these creatures, contributing to more biodiversity loss in Singapore. We have already lost many important species, and this project is only going to exacerbate the loss of our flora and fauna. Not only is Singapore losing its primary and secondary forests and woodlands, it is fast becoming a concrete jungle where temperatures are soaring. Not only is our wildlife suffering, but our people are too. Do we really want a Singapore where our future generations have no idea what a natural forest looks like?

The impact of destroying Maju Forest goes beyond wildlife; it affects us all. Forests play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, which is integral in combating climate change. By absorbing carbon dioxide, Maju Forest helps mitigate the effects of climate change, making its preservation vital to sustaining the delicate balance of nature. The rising temperatures and climate anomalies we are experiencing are exacerbated by deforestation, further tipping the scales towards an irreversible environmental crisis.

We urge the government to reconsider the plans to develop this area and, instead, implement alternative solutions that do not compromise our environmental heritage. We propose designating Maju Forest as a protected area, ensuring its preservation and allowing it to continue playing its vital role in our ecosystem. Sustainable development should be prioritized, focusing on initiatives that harmonize economic growth with environmental conservation.

It is crucial for our community to come together and voice our concerns. We cannot stand idly by as our natural treasures are put at risk.

By signing this petition, we stand united in the call to protect Maju Forest, preserve our biodiversity, and secure a healthier and sustainable future for generations to come. We need to act now to halt the destruction and ensure Maju Forest remains a thriving ecosystem for future generations.
