Save our Local Library: Petition for the Grants Pass County Commissioners

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Josephine County and supporters of the Josephine Community Library, urge the County Commissioners to rescind their 30-day notice to terminate the library’s lease and to honor the current lease agreement until its scheduled end in December 2025.

The Josephine Community Library is not a business—it is a vital public service that benefits every resident of our community. Libraries are cornerstones of education, literacy, access to technology, and community engagement. For decades, our library has provided invaluable resources and programming to thousands of county residents, including children, families, seniors, and vulnerable community members.

The library’s current lease, established in 2008, provides for an annual rent of $1, reflecting the county’s recognition of the library’s role as a public good rather than a profit-driven entity. The lease structure has allowed the library to dedicate its limited funds toward critical maintenance and programming. By abruptly terminating this agreement, the County Commissioners risk jeopardizing access to these essential services.

The library has responsibly utilized maintenance funding and is actively planning for a new facility, set to break ground in 2027. Terminating the lease agreement prematurely disrupts this progress and sends a message that the commissioners prioritize short-term financial gain over long-term community benefit. The library has expressed willingness to negotiate in good faith; however, a 30-day notice is insufficient for thoughtful discussions that ensure the continuity of this public service.

We call on the County Commissioners to:

 1. Rescind the 30-day lease termination notice immediately.

 2. Honor the current lease agreement until its original expiration in December 2025.

 3. Work collaboratively with the library to find a fair and sustainable path forward that ensures the library remains open and accessible to all.

Taxpayers want their contributions to support institutions like the library that uplift and strengthen our community. A library is a reflection of a county’s values—let us show that Josephine County values education, literacy, and public service.
