The Issue

I have always cherished our beautiful lakes as serene landmarks and essential natural resources in Chikkaballapur and Kolar. However, in recent years, these lakes have become repositories for semi-treated wastewater, a troubling development that risks the health and well-being of current and future generations.

Currently, semi-treated sewage water from the Hebbal-Nagavara Valley (HN Valley) and Koramangala-Challaghatta Valley (KC Valley) is being diverted to fill lakes in the Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts. Due to the limited two-level treatment process, this water remains contaminated and is seeping into the ground, ultimately tainting our ground water supply.

The situation is dire—not just for these districts but for all of us in Bangalore. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), vegetables grown using this contaminated water are sold throughout Bangalore and contain heavy metal particles. These metals pose a significant health risk, including neurological disorders and chronic diseases, threatening the well-being of our children and future generations.

We understand the critical need for water in these districts, but using semi-treated water isn't the answer. It puts us all at risk, especially when there is a viable alternative available. Neighboring Andhra Pradesh has shown that it is feasible to fill lakes with clean water, With Handri-Neeve (HNSS) project they lifted excess flood water from Krishna river, they have diverting water from the Krishna River basin ( Srisilam Dam) to fill lakes near the Karnataka border, especially in regions close to Chikkaballapur and Kolar. Collaborating with Andhra Pradesh could provide a sustainable, long-term solution that benefits both regions while safeguarding public health.

Therefore, I urge the Karnataka State Government to halt the current practice of using semi-treated wastewater to refill lakes in Chikkaballapur and Kolar. Instead, let's initiate meaningful discussions and collaborations with Andhra Pradesh to explore and implement sustainable water transfer solutions.

It's time for us to act decisively to protect the health of our residents and the ecological integrity of our region. Sign this petition today to demand safe, clean water for our lakes and a healthier future for us all.
