Save our koalas: reduce speed limit on Inverloch–Venus Bay Road
The issue
I've seen firsthand the tragic consequences of speeding vehicles on the Inverloch–Venus Bay Road, where our beloved and endangered koalas are losing their lives. This road runs through a known wildlife corridor, essential for the survival of these precious creatures. Every koala lost is a reminder of how fragile their existence is and how urgent it is for us to take action.
Koalas are uniquely Australian and are currently listed as endangered. According to the Australian Koala Foundation, there may be as few as 43,000 of them left in the wild. The lush habitats of Victoria's Bass Coast, including the area between Koonwarra–Pound Creek Road and Pound Creek Road, form critical homes for these marsupials.
Yet, roadkill remains a leading cause of koala fatalities, with speed being a significant factor. Vehicles traveling at higher speeds are less likely to spot wildlife crossing the road, leading to fatal accidents that could be prevented. To protect our koalas and ensure their safety, we must reduce the road's speed limit to 80 km/h. This adjustment would give drivers more time to react to the presence of wildlife and significantly cut down on fatal collisions.
Reducing the speed limit is not just a measure for koalas’ sake but is also crucial for ensuring driver safety in a region with frequent wildlife crossings. It is a win-win situation, and the responsibility lies with VicRoads, the Department of Transport and Planning, South Gippsland Shire Council, and relevant Victorian Government authorities to implement this change.
We implore you, the decision-makers and supporters alike, to consider the tremendous benefit this speed limit reduction would have on our community and our wildlife. Nature relies on us to make responsible choices when living alongside such magnificent creatures. Join us in fighting for the survival of our koalas and the safety of all who travel through this beautiful corridor.
Please sign this petition to urge the implementation of a reduced speed limit to protect our koalas and ensure safer roads for everyone.
