Save our Hobby Farms
Save our Hobby Farms
The Issue
Were you previously aware that the RM of Weyburn No. 67 has a limit on the number of animals that are allowed on country properties? As a result, a number of small farms are being forced to sell their animals, move or relocate their animals that have become a part of their family. Property owners such as ourselves are now receiving daily fines as a result of being over the number of animal units as per the RM of Weyburn by-laws.
The Ministry of Agriculture has specific recommendations on the number of animal units, which do not align with the current RM of Weyburn No. 67 recommendations. The Ministry of Agriculture allows for animal units to be based on the amount of land owned as compared to a set number of animals for each property, which does not change based on the amount of land. We feel that the by-laws for the RM of Weyburn need to be updated to reflect the current Ministry of Agriculture guidelines to support our small farms.
By signing this petition, you are in agreement that the RM of Weyburn needs to update their bylaws to be supportive of small farms and base their animal units on a current reputable source such as the Ministry of Agriculture guidelines. If we do not advocate for a change in the number of animal units, the small farms/hobby farms will be forced to shut down as a result. Our kids rely on this change for their future to be able to continue on with the activities they enjoy such as 4-H.
Thank-you for your support in keeping animals a part of our lives and our children's lives for years to come.
