Parker Hadley Preservation

As a concerned citizen of the Homer Glen, Illinois, area, I am deeply troubled by the proposed road project that threatens to destroy our beloved 4-mile corridor.

This consists of Parker Road, Chicago Bloomington Trail Road, and Hadley Road. This scenic route winds through historically significant properties, encompassing over 100 driveways, about 10 subdivision entrances/exits, historical structures, farmland, and woodlands.

It is not only a vital part of our community's heritage but also serves as a haven for endangered species and contributes to the overall environmental health of our region.

This petition aims to rally support from fellow residents and concerned citizens who believe in preserving our natural resources and protecting the rights of property owners. We must stand united against this ill-conceived road project that prioritizes industry standards over the well-being of our environment, endangered species, people's property rights, mature trees, and precious farmland.

The proposed road project by Will County, Illinois, poses several grave concerns:

1. Environmental Destruction: The construction process will lead to irreversible damage to the delicate ecosystem surrounding this corridor. Endangered species such as the Northern Long Eared Bat may inhabit these woodlands (surveyed in 2010 in Messenger Marsh) and would be sadly impacted by the destruction of trees.

2. Loss of Historical Structures: The corridor holds numerous historical structures that serve as tangible links to our past. These buildings tell stories about our ancestors' struggles and triumphs while shaping the unique character of Homer Glen. In research books, this roadway is considered a "Crossroads Community", and is an imperative link to our past settlers and Native Americans.

3. Property Rights Violation: Over 100 driveways along this rural road provide access to homes owned by hardworking individuals who have invested their time, money, and love into these properties for generations. Forcing them out or disrupting their lives with an unnecessary road expansion is an infringement on their fundamental rights. Additionally, over 4,000 trees have been tagged, some over 150 years old, and many have been damaged by these preliminary studies which residents knew nothing about.

4. Destruction of Farmland: Agriculture has been an integral part of Homer Glen's identity for centuries; it sustains local economies while providing fresh produce, eggs & meat for neighbors nearby. Destroying fertile farmland in favor of a road project is not only short-sighted but also undermines our commitment to sustainable practices. Many areas of the current road would be widened significantly, encroaching on farmland and Open Space lands which are deemed protected.

We urge the County and State authorities to reconsider their plans for this road project. (Will County & the state of Illinois.)

CURRENTLY- listed in our UPDATES - the county has approved of a JT (Jurisdictional Transfer) to the Village of Homer Glen of 3.16 miles of road, while another JT from the county to New Lenox Township has been approved for the transfer of .59 of a mile. (The full corridor ran through various territories.)

Instead, we propose exploring alternative solutions that prioritize environmental preservation, historical conservation, property rights, and sustainable development.

Let's set the bar high for future road projects by embracing innovative designs that work harmoniously with our natural surroundings. For example, keeping the road "as is", resurfacing the top without digging out the pozzolanic foundation, while using traffic calming solutions, signage, a lower speed limit, and not allowing truck traffic. Moreover, we cannot allow any extra funding! Any federal or state funding will equal industry standards which will demolish the natural biome.

By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for preserving our historic corridor and protecting the environment, endangered species, people's property rights, mature trees, and farmland. Together, let us send a powerful message to our local authorities that we value our heritage and demand responsible decision-making.

Join us in safeguarding the Homer Glen, Illinois, rich history and natural beauty for generations to come!

(Note: This petition is personal to me because I believe in fighting for those who cannot speak out or have a lack of resources to challenge the county and state.

It is my goal to ensure a better future where both progress and preservation can coexist...

while also stating, as Dr. Seuss's character the Lorax once said, "I SPEAK FOR THE TREES"!)
