Save Our Generational House System
For generations, our school’s House system has been a defining part of school life. It is far more than a way of organising students—it is a tradition that connects families across generations, builds lifelong friendships, fosters healthy competition, develops leadership, and creates an enduring sense of belonging.
Many current students, parents, grandparents, and alumni have proudly belonged to the same House. These shared connections strengthen our community and preserve a rich history that cannot be recreated once it is lost.
The proposed changes to the House structure have understandably caused concern throughout our school community. While we acknowledge the school’s commitment to reviewing its culture and supporting all students, many families believe such a significant change should only be made following broad and meaningful consultation with the entire school community.
It is our understanding that the recommendations have been informed by a cultural survey completed by approximately 850 people. Given the size and diversity of our school’s wider community—including current families, boarding and day students, alumni, and future families—we believe a decision of this magnitude warrants broader engagement before longstanding traditions are fundamentally changed.
By signing this petition, you are asking the school to:
• Pause the proposed changes to the current House system.
• Undertake comprehensive consultation with the wider school community before any final decision is made.
• Recognise the historical, cultural and generational significance of the existing House structure.
• Explore alternative solutions that address any identified concerns while preserving the traditions that unite our community.
This petition is not about resisting change for the sake of tradition. It is about ensuring that any change to one of the school’s most enduring and cherished institutions reflects the voices of the broader community and respects the legacy that generations of students and families have built together.
If you value the traditions of our House system—its rivalries, House spirit, colours, songs, leadership opportunities, family connections and the sense of belonging it creates—we encourage you to sign this petition and help preserve an important part of our school’s identity for future generations.
from a student perspective we feel like we’ve been robbed of our identity, our home and family. Being a part of boarding is not only accommodation at school but forever family forever friends and forever relationships. The rich culture that lays at the for front of who we are today is shaped by past and present members of our community. It’s time to hold Ballarat grammar and the school board accountable . ITS TIME FOR CHANGE.
