Save our Crossing Guard
Save our Crossing Guard
The Issue
Springwater Council has decided to discontinue the School Crossing Guard Program, resulting in the termination of Carl Wright, our beloved and award winning Crossing Guard, whom works tirelessly to make sure our children are able to safely cross Highway 93 each day to and from school in Hillsdale. This decision was based on recommendations from an assessment that was done by the Township on the need for Crossing Guards. The results were as follows (and stated in the minutes from the August 21 Council meeting):
Whereas a warrant assessment of various locations around the Township were conducted in accordance with the School Crossing Guard Program Policy; and,Whereas the data showed that no crossing guards are warranted at any location within the Township.
Therefore Be It Resolved That staff be directed to follow policy and discontinue any assessed school crossing guard location not meeting the school crossing guard warrant criteria, as of the end of the 2022/23 school year.
As Hillsdale residents, we are fully aware of the concerns we have of our children crossing Highway 93 without assistance. Even with the traffic lights, there have been numerous "close calls" with drivers not adhering to the lights and stopping. Perhaps if members of Council had used feedback from local residents in their assessment, the outcome would be much different. They would realize the need for it. Please fill out this petition to show our concerns about the School Crossing Guard Program being cancelled in our community of Hillsdale. Children should not be worried about getting to and from school safely!
