Save Our City Centre Waterfront Car Park

The issue

To: Tauranga City Council

We, the undersigned business residents, visitors, and supporters of Tauranga, express our concern and opposition to the proposed closure of one of the city centre's most vital car parking spaces, the Waterfront Strand car park (150 spaces).

Reason for Concern:

With the busiest time of the year approaching being our seasonal summer period, the closure of the Waterfront Strand car park will have a detrimental impact on the businesses located in the city centre. Many of these businesses have already faced significant challenges, including construction disruption and the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than ever, they depend on accessible and convenient parking options to attract customers and thrive.

We are aware that the original council plans were to only close the Waterfront carpark at the same time as Harington St car park opened. Presumably, the council knew that the loss of 150 parks from the city centre would have a major negative effect. We are very disappointed that plans have changed and believe that if the Waterfront Strand carpark closes, the city centre summer trade could be significantly harmed.

As the city transformation continues, we are experiencing city-wide disruption, and we think it is only a fair request to provide businesses with the best trading opportunity they can hope for during this disruptive time.

Our Request:

We respectfully request that Tauranga City Council reconsider the timing and necessity of this parking space closure. We understand that Council works may be required, but we ask that these be postponed until alternative parking solutions are in place and fully operational. This delay will ensure that local businesses can continue to provide essential services and boost the city's economy during the crucial summer trading season.

Action Needed:

  1. Delay the closure of the Waterfront Strand car park space until alternative parking options are available.
  2. Prioritise the timely implementation of these alternative parking solutions.

We are not against the redevelopment of our city centre for the future, however, better planning and consideration of business owners and the people who directly impact the city's economy is required.
