The Issue
Every person has the right to live a healthy life, a sentiment deeply rooted in our collective consciousness. Yet, this fundamental right is being flagrantly violated due to the escalating air pollution, particularly in northern India. The situation has reached critical levels, with the air quality deteriorating rapidly due to both natural climate factors and man-made negligence. It is simply not fair that due to a few individuals' irresponsibility and greed, entire communities are subjected to suffer for their entire lives.
Air pollution in northern India has turned into a severe crisis. According to the IQAir 2020 report, India houses 22 of the world's 30 most polluted cities. Around 1.67 million deaths per year are attributed to air pollution in India, making it the fifth-largest cause of death in the country (The Lancet, 2020). The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared public health emergencies in parts of the country due to hazardous air quality levels.
The right to breathe clean air is as fundamental as the right to clean water and adequate shelter. Still, we see continuous failures to enforce stricter policies on emissions, industrial waste disposal, and stricter construction norms. The gap between policy and practice remains wide, leaving the common citizen to bear the brunt of choking and toxic air.
We propose immediate actionable solutions to combat this impending doom. First, enforce strict penalties for industries and vehicles that exceed pollution standards. Second, launch a massive afforestation drive to restore green cover. Third, promote public transportation networks powered by clean energy. Fourth, incentivize and subsidize the use of renewable energy sources in urban and rural areas.
Let us unite to serve justice to our environment and to the millions of life forms whose existence is at stake. Sign this petition and urge policymakers to take decisive action toward creating a sustainable and healthy atmosphere. Your signature can turn the tide in favor of clean air and a nurturing environment for future generations. This is not just a petition; it is a call for change, a call for life. Let's make the right choice. Sign now.
