Save our 100-year-old Monterey Pine Tree

The Issue

This stunning Monterey Pine Tree has been a part of my life since I moved to this neighborhood. Planted over a century ago, it stands as a majestic testament to nature's beauty and resilience, directly behind my house, providing shade, habitat for wildlife, and an irreplaceable connection to the past.

Recently, our local Board/HOA has decided to remove this historical gem, citing concerns that seem to overlook the environmental and emotional value it holds for so many of us here. The Monterey Pine, a species native to California, is now rare in its natural habitat due to urban development. Stanford University and the cities of Monterey and San Francisco are part of a small group of places still home to these incredible specimens.

The tree not only enhances the aesthetics and value of our properties but also supports our community by purifying the air, sequestering carbon, and providing a habitat for various local wildlife species. Its removal could have significant negative environmental impacts and diminish the quality of life in our neighborhood.

We believe there are alternative solutions to the concerns raised by the Board/HOA. Regular maintenance and inspection by professional arborists could ensure the tree's health and safety without resorting to removal. Other communities have implemented tree preservation strategies that balance safety and ecological importance by using protective trimming and cabling techniques.

We invite all community members and environmental enthusiasts to sign this petition to urge the Board/HOA to reconsider their decision. Let us work together to save our spectacular Monterey Pine for future generations. Please add your name to this petition and help preserve a piece of living history.
