SAVE ORANGEFIELD PARK stop the proposed floodlit 4G pitch
The Issue

Orangefield Park is located in BT5, East Belfast
A recent proposal for a 4G Floodlit, fenced off Pitch would completely dominate a valued shared open green space within our park.
The current traffic issues and pressures faced by residents in the area. Currently over capacity and a major issue.

Orangefield Park serves as the largest expanse of open parkland along the Connswater Community Greenway, brimming with wildflowers and essential habitat for diverse wildlife. This beloved green space is a vital part of the community, providing an essential retreat for residents, families, schools, community, church and local groups. It is a place for recreation, informal sports, and a variety of outdoor pursuits that contribute to the community's health and well-being.
However, the proposed development of a floodlit, fenced 4G pitch threatens this cherished environment. While the intention to promote sports is important, it's crucial to consider the broader implications on this public green space. Such construction would not only alter the landscape but also negatively impact the local ecosystem. The introduction of artificial light and sound pollution would disrupt the local wildlife, particularly affecting nocturnal species and nesting birds.
Furthermore, this proposed change would limit access to the park for those who currently rely on it for unstructured play and relaxation. Transforming a natural environment into a structured sports facility could deter the community from using the space as flexibly as they do now. It's vital to preserve the park's current state to maintain its appeal as an inclusive, accessible environment for all.
We believe the proposed development would have a significant negative impact on the area due to:
• Loss of accessible public green space
• Increased light pollution from floodlighting.
• Increased noise and traffic congestion
• Harm to local wildlife and the natural environment
• Reduced availability of open community space
• The enclosure and restriction of an area currently open to everyone
• Concerns regarding anti-social behaviour and parking pressures linked to increased organised
activity, when traffic is already beyond what the area can support.
While we support investment in local sports facilities, we believe alternative locations should be fully explored, before sacrificing one of the community’s most valued green spaces.
We are urging our elected representatives to reject the proposal for the enclosed floodlit 4G pitches at Orangefield Park and instead work with residents to protect and preserve the park as an open and accessible space for the entire community.

"By safeguarding wildlife-rich spaces and shielding the city from climate change challenges, we are committed to supporting biodiversity and nature in Belfast. This is at the heart of being a green city
Belfast City Council drives its local biodiversity initiatives through its Corporate Plan and the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP). Key efforts focus on large-scale urban greening, reversing habitat loss, and increasing community engagement with nature across the city"
Join us in protecting Orangefield Park by urging the decision-makers to reconsider the proposed development plans. Preserve this unique space for future generations to enjoy.
