Dear Supporter,
We wanted to share an important update on our campaign to protect the Oak Park and Shelly Beach pavilions.
1) This morning, over 30 community members — together with the Petition Promotion Committee members— gathered at Oak Park for a Flash Mob opposing Council’s proposal to transform the pavilions into a block of enclosed cubicle toilets. The atmosphere was united, positive, and determined.
2) During the gathering we held a sign showing the powerful support behind this campaign:
➡ Over 1,700 people have signed the petition so far.
As of tonight, we have 1,782 signatories—a remarkable show of community concern.
3) Despite this strong response, our petition and the voices of over 500 signatories submitted through the Have Your Say process were not acknowledged in the official consultation summary.
We want to be absolutely clear: we demand to be heard now.
4) Today we also confirmed that Oak Park and its Pavilion have recently been listed as Local Heritage under the Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan (LEP).
This is a major development. This reinforces our argument: any proposed changes must respect the site’s heritage significance and the landscape values of the place.
5) As a community, we are not opposed to refreshing or renovating the buildings.
But any upgrade must:
- respect the Art Deco heritage,
- preserve the landscape values,
- and maintain the open-air character that makes Oak Park and Shelly Beach so loved.
6) Finally, we are calling for genuine community involvement through a co‑design process.
Local users, heritage experts, and community groups should have a real voice in shaping the future of these places—not simply be informed after decisions are made.
Thank you for standing with us and for helping this movement grow. Your involvement is making a real difference, and we will continue to update you as the campaign progresses.
Warm regards,
The Petition Promotion Committee
