Save North and West Melbourne from traffic and trucks! Prioritise people not traffic!
The issue
We need your help.
North and West Melbourne are under threat. Residential streets, which should be safe havens for families and pedestrians, have turned into dangerous thoroughfares. Large trucks and heavy traffic are being funnelled through our neighborhoods from the West Gate Tunnel, creating a hazardous environment.
Currently, streets such as Victoria, King, Dryburgh, Spencer and Curzon have speed limits set at 60kph. While for some this might appear reasonable, the reality is that these speeds are far too high for areas densely populated with families, children, and elderly pedestrians. Furthermore, there have been numerous accidents, including tragic fatalities, where speeding vehicles lost control and barreled onto footpaths, endangering anyone in their path.
Add to that mix, thousands more vehicles through our suburbs including massive B double trucks.
You may think this doesn’t affect you because you might be one of the lucky ones who has had your street blocked off to traffic, but you will have to cross these intersections to go to school or work every day.
More traffic disadvantages everyone.
There are already signs on Dynon road directing City- bound traffic to turn off Spencer St into Dryburgh St and Victoria Street.
We are residential areas and we deserve the same consideration as those in the West who now have truck bans on their streets.
We petition the State Government, Transport Victoria and the City of Melbourne to take action NOW to reduce the speed limit on our roads to 40kph to protect resident safety, ban trucks through residential streets (especially at night!) and urgently review the policy regarding traffic in our area.
Our petition calls for the following substantive changes to be made without delay:
1. Reduce the speed limits on all impacted residential streets (including those classified as arterial roads) to a safer 40kph, thus ensuring streets align with similar urban areas globally where pedestrian safety is prioritized.
2. Implement traffic-calming measures, such as extended pedestrian crossings, to discourage speeding and reduce accidents.
3. Increase patrols and enforcement of speed limits, particularly at peak traffic times, to ensure compliance and deterrence of reckless driving behavior.
4. ban trucks through residential areas particularly at night and clearly signpost the area as residential so traffic is aware of pedestrians and safety
5. Urgently review traffic and the impacts of the West Gate Tunnel
It is disheartening that despite countless voices speaking up against the unchecked increase of traffic, the risks have been consistently downplayed or ignored. The safety of Melbourne's residents should not be an afterthought but a paramount priority. The time to act is now.
By signing this petition, you are joining your voice with those of North and West Melbourne. Let's urge Melbourne City Council and Transport Victoria to prioritize the safety of our communities and implement these much-needed changes. Together, we can help make our streets safer for everyone.
