Save Native Species Pollinator Gardens by amending Watertown, NY's dated By-Laws
The Issue
Pollinators, people, and plants all are at stake with the loss of native species habitats being forcefully removed for grass lawns. Pollinators loose out on local food sources, shelters, and resting spots they know and recognize. Pollinators like the 3-4 species of bumblebees, solitary bees, 3 species of moths, 6 species of butterflies, numerous birds, and mammals we have seen on property will lose both their homes and food sources. People lose the conversation, knowledge of noninvasive species as well as the beauty of both these pollinators and plants. We have had families, daycares, and classes all stop by and ask what is it we are doing on our property. This provides an inner education enrichment for all ages through visual, audio, and kinesthetic learning. The plants lose a stand against invasive species as it diminishes seedling sources. By dwindling the local population and replacing it with imported plants or not giving the land a chance to grow what occurs natively, the nutrients of the soil get depleted quicker. More diseases / invading species have a chance to be introduced to the local environment, and we simply lose the natural beauty that belongs here where we live.
The current by-law in section 98.1 in the City of Watertown, NY is dated and vague. This allows the city to force current resident to mow whatever they see as "grass or weeds" to their standards of under 12 inches. The city has code enforcement simply drive by and take photographs of properties being complained about on a dated tablet and written up. There is little to no actual identification of native plants or defense in regards to the gardens .
Without an exemption for certified native pollinator gardens being added, these habitats are at risk of being removed. The pollinators that depend on the refuge within the city will leave the area. They also cannot depend on imported landscape plants that are non native for sustanability as these plants can do more harm than good to the pollinators native to our area.
