Save Mule Town
The Issue
Issuance of a City-Wide Moratorium.
Columbia TN is currently facing a severe resource crisis, as recognized by the passing of ordinances 4576 and 4577. These ordinances acknowledge the overwhelming strain on our city’s resources, which cannot sustain additional developments at this critical juncture. It's imperative for the common good that immediate action is taken to address this crisis responsibly and thoroughly.
As a resident of Columbia, I have valid and logical concerns with radical urban developments during this resource crisis. The infrastructure and services are already stretched beyond their limits, leaving our community vulnerable to further stress. New developments continue to be approved without adequate consideration of their impact on our finite resources. Allowing this to persist endangers the quality of life of current residents and places future generations at risk of inheriting an irreparable situation.
The City Council of Columbia must take definitive action to protect our community. A city-wide moratorium should be issued on all developments approved since 2023 and ongoing ones from 2021 onward. This pause is critical to prevent exacerbating the resource crisis and to allow time for a strategic review.
Moreover, it is essential to commission a third-party audit to accurately assess the extent of the resource crisis and determine which developments are exacerbating the situation. A detailed and impartial audit will provide a clear picture of our current resource situation, equipping decision-makers with the data needed to make informed choices about our city's development plan.
By supporting this moratorium and audit, we are advocating for a sustainable future for Columbia—a future where developments align with our community's ability to support growth without risking the collapse of our vital resources. We urge the City Council to act swiftly and decisively so we can ensure a balanced and equitable approach to development in Columbia.
===================================
Due to the passing of ordinance 4576 and 4577, the Council has acknowledged a resource crisis in the City of Columbia.
For this reason and to justify its passing, the Council has no option but to issue an official moratorium on all development projects until this crisis has been largely resolved.
During this moratorium, a third party audit must be completed in order to determine which projects may resume and which are to be held until resources have been restored.
Failure to issue such a moratorium will be seen as an act against the best interest of the general public, as a sitting Council member cannot justify approving the increase of resources while also approving of projects that vastly deplete them.
In addition to this, due to growing concerns of histoplasmosis and the rapid pace of development in Central Tennessee, the third party audit will work with environmental firms and health agencies to determine if the proposed and already disturbed areas are affected by this fungal disease.
