The Issue

Kim Morin, the director of the Spokane Humane Society, has taken actions that have led to the premature death of numerous dogs under her oversight. This includes Athena, an innocent dog with a spotless record and zero bites, who was unfairly moved to another high-kill shelter to be euthanized. This shift came after public outcry and a petition to transfer Athena to a foster home. Instead of taking action that was in Athena's best interest, Kim transferred Athena to SCRAPs. SCRAPs is a high kill shelter, and an unfamiliar environment without anyone Athena knows. She will die full of uncertainty and fear. We cannot let her story repeat with other dogs who have committed no crimes and are merely victims of an inadequate system.

The Spokane Humane Society, an institution that should stand as a beacon of hope and protection for animals, has instead turned into a place of fear for these voiceless creatures. The policies and programs pushed by its leadership threaten the lives of dogs who deserve a second chance, a chance at rehabilitation, or simply a chance to be understood and rehomed. Instead, they face the risk of euthanasia, a fate that should be reserved strictly for cases where there is no other option available.

Statistics from various animal welfare organizations show that many shelters across the country have significantly reduced the number of euthanized animals through implementation of more humane policies. Even in difficult cases, specialized training, fostering programs, community involvement, and behavioral rehabilitation can make a world of difference. There must be accountability for decisions made within the Spokane Humane Society, to align with these humane practices and ensure wrongful euthanasia ceases immediately.

We urge the Spokane Humane Society board of directors to reevaluate their current policies and current director, and to look towards successful models implemented in other shelters nationwide. We call for transparency regarding the euthanasia policy and the implementation of life-saving programs that educate and involve the community in these animals' lives. This includes routinely considering alternatives to euthanasia, providing detailed reports on animals' histories and outcomes, and actively seeking foster or permanent homes for all dogs.

The city of Spokane, WA, must not allow this behavior to continue unchallenged. Athena and countless other dogs deserve justice and a fair chance at life. It is time to demand change, accountability, and compassion from the Spokane Humane Society to ensure no more animals are needlessly put to death. Please sign this petition to save future Athenas from this cruel and unnecessary fate.
