My partner plays in the ice hockey team at Moray Leisure Centre, and the thought of losing the public ice rink is genuinely distressing to us. This rink is not just a place for sport; it is a focal point for community gatherings, a hub where friendships are formed, and an accessible venue for physical fitness and fun.

The importance of the ice rink extends beyond recreational skating, figure skating and ice hockey. The rink hosts a wide range of events that cater to individuals of all ages, from beginner skaters to competitive leagues. It provides a wholesome environment that encourages active lifestyles while promoting social connections among its users. For many, this rink is a second home where they can escape from daily stress and immerse themselves in a supportive and friendly 

There is also a large junior curling club with some juniors having gone on to national and regional academies within the Scottish Curling programme.  We have also 2x paralympian bronze medallists, and a hugely successful international bonspiel that has been held for 15 years.  

Closing the rink would not only impact the athletes but also various community programs. It would deprive children and teens of the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe and supervised setting.

According to Sport Scotland, sport and physical activity deliver up to £39 billion (Gross Value Added) in our national economy, a figure that underscores the economic importance of maintaining such facilities. Retaining the ice rink is not just an investment in sports; it is a commitment to the community's physical and mental wellness, and economic vitality.

We request that the Moray local authorities reconsider closing the rink, and instead explore alternative solutions, such as seeking additional funding or partnerships to ensure its continued operations.
