The Trump administration wants to remove 900 bison from the Montana prairie to make room for cattle ranchers — and animal lovers across the country should be alarmed.

Bison are one of America's most iconic animals. Once nearly wiped off the map, they've made a remarkable comeback thanks to conservation efforts like those of the American Prairie Foundation, a nonprofit that has spent years responsibly managing a herd of 900 bison on federal lands in northern Montana.

These aren't wild strays. They're tagged, vaccinated, and legally permitted. The foundation leases unused land to local cattle ranchers, sends bison to Native American tribes to rebuild their herds, and donates meat to food banks. They've followed every rule — for over 40 years.

Now, under pressure from ranching interests, the Bureau of Land Management has revoked the foundation's grazing permit — citing a 1934 law to argue that bison aren't livestock. Moving the herd would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and undo decades of conservation work.

Bison belong on the American prairie. Not because of politics — because that's where they've always been.
